Hebrews Chapter 3 Verse 1

  • I hiccupped there when I began to study this and immediately hit this phrase, “holy brethren.” Holy…the writer of this book, the Holy Spirit Himself, God Himself, looks at these Christian Jews…and for that matter even all Christians…even me…and calls me holybut I know me, I KNOW ME! You know what I’m saying? I’m a mess! And yet here in the Greek, this word “holy,” “hagios,” literally means, “My most holy one…”
  • It’s astonishing! Striking! Bewildering! I mean this is THE Creator. The One who is absolutely perfect! All good and all pure…looking to me and calling me pure, just like Him…man what has He done? Either He has made an epic mistake…or He has accomplished something eternally tremendous! Extreme! That He alone has done this. He alone has made me acceptable. He alone has made propitiation for my sins…because on my own, even as religious as I could possibly ever be, I’m still as unholy and impure as the devil himself…
  • And so I considerconsider this heavenly calling, literally meaning this “invitation initiating from and existing even in…heaven…” to come to the Apostle and High Priest of our confession, Jesus the Christ! Man, how is it that I am not lost? How is it that I am not condemned? How is it that my sin and my shame and my failure as a human being created in the very image of God…how is it that I am called holy by Holy Himself…it’s because of Jesus…and that’s it! And if that sank in man…(and it will one day while we are watching the wailing of the White Throne Judgment…), if that would sink in today…how I might follow after Him all the more…I pray for more faith…
  • One more thing about this idea of hagios…this calling me holy…not good, not good enough, not clean enough and a good enough person but man this means absolutely most pure and entirely completely utterly void of anything incorrect or deficient or a-stinky…this blew my mind as I considered how can this be, KNOWING ME…this word appears 229 times in 219 verses in the Bible…you’re like…ooooooooook, so what…well check out this dork-nado! (Like a tornado of dork-dum) Thinking on, considering, how it is that I can possibly be absolutely pure…

  • 229 plus 219 equals 448. Yes! But wait, there’s more! 4-4-8…I see this as 1-1-2…so how can I be made holy, how is it that I am saved and acceptable into the presence of God the Father forever although I am myself a dirty rotten scumbag? 1-1-2…Father (1), Holy Spirit (1)…and yet the Son…there’s 2 there…why? Because that is where I am! Hidden in Himwashed in His precious life giving blood! Clothed in His robes of righteousness! Oh Yes!!!!! Told you it was dorkalooza but man so very profound and true and entirely what is being said to us in verse 1….

Hebrews Chapter 3 Verse 2

  • And so the introduction of Moses…this would raise the attention of the readers for sure!

Hebrews Chapter 3 Verses 3

  • I love this floetry! How the writer is weaving these wonderful personal and yet profound pictures in the minds and hearts of the Christian Jews and even ours. This whole idea of the house and the builder of the house…the house could be a nation, it could be a people, it could be a culture…we see this comparison made throughout the scripture…David told God that he would build Him a house but God said no…you have too much blood on your hands…I will build you a house! Ah great, thought David, I’ll take three bedrooms and two baths…! NOPE! He was talking about a nation, a lineage, eventually a Savior!!!   A whole new race of people…born-agains through his house as it were!
  • And so the writer says here that Moses was faithful to the house, even the house in terms of Judaism, receiving the law, establishing the law, holding to the law and ministering the law to the peoplebut Jesus is greater! Because Jesus built the house! Oh man! This touches the depths of even our beings man! Because what is greater than being at home? Nothing!
  • I talked to a guy that I used to work with in Virginia this week and he gave me this great exhortation…to just be at home in God is his aim! Think about what talking about your home, your house…what does that take you immediately to? Comfort man…being free…

  • You’re out all day, working, going, got your kicks on, your work clothes maybe, your not-so-comfy dress shoes or work boots and your coats and your hats and stuff and then when you get home…stretchy pants! House shoes! Sweeeeeaaaaaats! So comfortable. And you know they don’t match! HA! You’re just being you! Comfortable and at ease and man that is the picture here for the Hebrews!
  • Yes you’re house, your culture, your home-feeling is Judasim and the law of Moses but man the Builder of the home has come! And He is Jesus! And so who is due your attention? Your “honor” as it says here…the house or the builder?
  • Huge revelation coming…

Hebrews Chapter 3 Verse 4

  • Whoa! Whoa! Whoa! Verse 1 introduces Christ Jesus as the Subject. Verse 3 says that Jesus is the Builder. And then verse 4 says that God is the Builder. Oh man! Who then is Jesus!? MASTER BUILDER! Everything is AWESOMMMMEEE! HA! Jesus is…oh yes….GOD! Boom! And then even verse 2 says that this Jesus, God, was appointed by…God! And so what do we have!? A mystery! That God was appointed by God. That the Son was appointed by the Father and that they are both….GOD! BOOM! Man the doctrine of the Trinity is so very clearly interwoven in the lines of scripture!!

Hebrews Chapter 4 Verses 5 – 6

  • So Christ built the home…He is Son over His own home…which means He Himself went through it…even authored it…being the first among men born out of the tomb of sin…and we are indeed members of His home if we hold fast…stay the course as it were….the fearless and public faith firm to the end! In other words, to the Hebrews, you are free! You’re free to go! Free from traditionalism and free from religiosity and free from your own efforts at spiritualitywhy go back? Why turn back to futility and customs and rituals that cannot make you well…you’re already home
  • But if that is your bent…to stray from the Builder and once again worship the house…then there’s almost a warning here…you are indeed in Christ, saved and freed IF…there’s that word…conditional implication…IF you remain…
  • Matt, are you saying that one can lose their salvation or walk away from their salvation? No, not at all, I don’t believe that actually…I believe your salvation is not held securely by you but by Him…you are not salvation, He is…but what I am saying, what the Bible does teach is that if you can walk away, if you do walk away, if you can leave then maybe He’s not holding you…maybe you’ve never let Him get a hold of you…there’s no guarantee there that you were ever home man…
  • It’s 1 John 2:19…turn over there…you see…if you walk out…then man there’s no guarantee that you were ever here in the first place…so don’t drift man…don’t go back…stay the course…hold firm and steadfast the hope that was foreshadowed by Moses yet delivered in full by Jesus Christ…and so honor Him man…defer to Him man…
  • That word honor back in verse 3…do you know what that word is in the Greek…time…literally…time…it means to defer to, to look to, to devote to, to seek after…but I see also that it means man your time, my time…it’s all in His hands…and you’re given this one life…an amount of time…but His desire is to deliver to you eternity…where the time you have here on earth to live is just the beginning…everlasting time…everlasting life…Moses couldn’t do it…religion can’t do it…spirituality can’t do it…saints can’t do it…angels can’t do it…the pope can’t do it…only Jesus can do that…and so look to Him…and come home…your sins have been forgiven and His desire is to clear you of all defects…make you holy…
