Genesis 3 vs 1-6

Genesis Chapter 3 Verse 1

  • Ok, this is a crazy scene! Now the first thing that strikes me – that I pay attention to…(because I’ve been in church for a little while now)…is that this is the devil manifesting himself in the Garden of Eden in the form of a serpent! And that is true, because we read that Satan is the “serpent of old” in Revelation 12:9 and we read in Ezekiel 28 that Satan was indeed in the Garden of Eden…but take a step back for a second…is Eve talking to an animal? And the animal is talking back? See what I’m saying? A crazy scene!

  • Now, we have no other indication that this was normal at any time of creation at any other place in scripture but, I mean, Eve isn’t at least a little freaked out that an animal is talking? I don’t want to make any conclusions off of one verse but I just think this is practically…a very crazy scene!
  • And the Bible describes the serpent as relatively cunning. Why relatively? Because to be cunning there must be something to compare. Something alone can’t necessarily be cunning but compared to Eve, compared to creation, comparatively speaking, in the Garden, on earth, Satan had and has made himself…very sneaky. Crafty, subtle and even prudent. Doing things that will benefit himself and his plan…

  • A great characteristic in a battle by the way because it is an ultra-advantage to not be detected! And we have another first here, the first times Satan speaks to God’s child. And the first thing Satan says is exactly what he says today that leads many (even us) down the prim rose path to life-crud, “Has God indeed (really) said?” The questioning of God’s Word…the lamp on our feet, the light on our path…all he wants to do, and he is QUITE successful I’m sorry to report…is put that light out…it’s been the same since the beginning…

Genesis Chapter 3 Verses 2 – 3

  • Now this is really interesting because is that what God said? No, actually. There has been an addition to God’s Word…so does that mean that imperfection within man entered here? This is a real discussion in some circles. I don’t see it that way. Here’s how I see it…God gave the command to not eat of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. To whom did He give that command? To Adam…right. Eve wasn’t even born yet!
  • And so where did Eve hear it? Right, from Adam…and Adam loved his wife…Adam cared for her…He was the overseer, the tiller the caretaker of the Garden of Eden and everything in it…and so the conversation with Adam probably happened right there in front of the tree and he could, out of love, respect, protection and adoration said, “baby girl, don’t even touch it my love…” You know he was slick…and Eve took that as the very Word of God…there is no imperfection there, friends…
  • And I know, I’ve even taught that this is an example of adding to the Word of God, putting words in God’s mouth and it leads to horrible deception and that can be taught here for sure, but I just don’t see this statement as original sin and check this out, Satan doesn’t even capitalize on the “touch” statement…

Genesis Chapter 3 Verses 4 – 5

  • Satan uses a tactic called pride. God knows something that He is withholding from you. You should know it. You deserve to know it…and in the moment that you do what you know is questionable, wrong, what you’ve been told not to do…you’ll force His hand…man oh man do so many, including myself, wrestle with this pride sometimes! God, show me…tell me…speak to me…and the truth is, all He should have to say, as our loving perfect holy wonderful Father…is, “Trust Me…”
  • Now the enemy makes a promise to Eve…to mankind…to you and to me…that in the moment you turn to self, turn away from God, you surely will not die and in fact, you might find some earthly value…and he delivers in a sick/twisted way…as you sell your soul for whatever that earthly value is…

Genesis Chapter 3 Verse 6

  • John wrote in 1 John 2:15-16, “Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world.” And the trap laid by the enemy here has them all. Eve saw that the tree was pleasant to the eyesthe lust of the eyes, good for foodthe lust of the flesh, and desirable to make one wisethe pride of life…and she got got
  • And then Adam got got…but how? 1 Timothy 2:14 says, “Adam was not deceived…” Adam, (God’s appointed rep on earth), turned on God with his eyes wide open and for that reason, the Bible assigns the responsibility for the fall of the human race to him. Romans 5:12 says, “Through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men,” and 1 Corinthians 15:22 says, “In Adam, all die…even so in Christ all shall be made alive.”
  • Why did he do it? We don’t exactly know. Many have said and I have said myself that Adam saw his wife in a fallen state and chose rather to join her than for her to be lost to him. Sounds so romantic and thoughtful but that makes it no less horrific and absolutely wrong.
