Exodus 4 vs 14-31

Exodus Chapter 4 Verses 22 – 26

  • What on earth is going on here? There are probably hundreds of theories just due to the fact that this is so odd and seems even out of place because we just witnessed this long conversation between God and Moses….and yet now we read that the Lord met him while he was on the way and sought to kill him!
  • It appears, if we use context, which is really all that we have, that there was something off, something wrong, there was an issue at home…and what we read is that his wife circumcised Moses son. That is a clue.  That was Moses’ job…and yet it had been left undone.  I think the only thing we can conclude rightly from this mysterious record is the fact that God takes the management of the house extremely seriously.
  • 1 Timothy 3:1-5 gives some of the qualifications of an overseer within the family of God. Notice, if a man cannot fulfil his calling at home first then God’s Word is clear, he will not be fit to fulfil his calling outside of the home.  Moreover, in 1 Timothy 5:8, God makes a staggering statement in that He says, “If anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.”  You really can’t get anymore unlike God, set yourself more as His enemy, than to forsake your family…the very thing He has sworn not ever to do…even to fight against ever doing that, He forsook Himself…dying in our place for our freedom…
  • And so Moses is confronted by God and it appears that this confrontation is because Moses had neglected his leadership at home…and while God it says here, “let him go,” it is evident that the damage is done with Zipporah, isn’t it? Have you ever heard of the phrase, “Death by a thousand cuts?”  No big blows, not huge issues…but the little things are left undone and the familiarity of family has bred a laziness of spirit…guard your homes men and women…your home, your mannerism, your look when he or she arrives, your reaction, these are all things that either support or undermine the truth of the gospel in your own lives…

Exodus Chapter 4 Verse 27

  • What was this like? Faced with failure at home, recovering from repentance…because sometime that takes time…sin takes a toll on you…and God sends to Moses the brother that he hasn’t seen in 40 years.  His older  Now, I don’t have an older brother, an older blood brother, but I have some old brothers…and there is great strength of encouragement there, especially coming out of a difficult season…
  • God had told Moses that He would send Aaron and yet there had been this problem between him and God…as unsure as we saw Moses before, I bet he was terrified now…and so God reminds him of His faithfulness…, “I said Aaron would come.” Knowing that God is true to His Word…that I can take Him at His word, means everything to me.  That provides a lamp to my feet and a light to my path, Psalm 119:105!
  • And so Moses, head hanging, “happy wife, happy life” is not his slogan today…his son in pain because of him, his God not well pleased…and out comes his big brother and kisses him. What we’ll see next is Moses walking in his calling…God is so good to give us loving brothers and sisters to encourage us and to put a little Neosporin on those thousand cuts…

Exodus Chapter 4 Verses 28 – 31

  • The wisdom and provision of God is on display. Aaron is known by the people, trusted by the people and so he is used by God to open the door for Moses, and once that door is open, God confirms Moses to the people by the signs that were given to him.  All the worry of Moses…Moses, just trust Me…all the anxiety, all the fear…Moses, just trust me…all of those pangs of emotions…  God’s provision has come to pass…next stop, Pharaoh…where God will again, with perfect consistency show Himself perfectly faithful!
